What to do in an accident

At some point in our lifetime the chances are that we will be involved in at least one road traffic accident.  With over 31 million cars on the road, 10 thousand accidents occurring each day and over 300 thousand injuries a year it’s an unfortunate but inevitable fact.

So what should you do if your involved in a RTA (Road Traffic Accident)  This is Real Compensations advise to you:

  • Firstly if your are involved in an accident and someone other than you has been injured or maybe damage has been caused to another persons property then you must stop and give your name and address.  If the vehicle is not your own you must provide the details of the owner also and your registration number, and insurance details if you have them to hand to any of the parties involved.
  • You have a responsibility to report the accident to the police within 24 hours if you have not stopped and given your details to the parties involved in the accident.
  • Take note of any damage to the vehicle and write it down.
  • Take note of the colour, make and model of any other vehicles involved, together with their number plates.
  • Take note of the other drivers' names and addresses
  • Take note of any witness names and addresses
  • Always try to inform the police in all cases apart from minor scrapes.
  • Do NOT make any admission about liability.
  • Make your best effort to draw a rough sketch plan of the accident scene and where the vehicles ended up.  Even rough measurements of where the vehicles ended up, helps.
  • When your able make a note of what happened in your own words.
  • notify your insurers as soon as you can.
  • if you have suffered any injury, whatever that may be get it checked out by a doctor, whiplash injuries may not always occur straight away.
