Seatbelts save peoples lives in the unfortunate event of a car crash. Since the introduction of seatbelt legislation 20 years ago more than 50 thousands lives have been saved. At the time this law was passed many people complained, however it just shows you how important it turned out to be.
On today’s roads 10% of people still don’t where seatbelts in the front of a car. In the event of a car crash the personal injury this could cause would be devastating and only 65% of people where rear seatbelts.
Only a fraction of drivers ensure that they are properly wearing their seatbelts in the car, when really to avoid personal injury in the event of a car accident you should ensure you seatbelt is as tight as possible before setting off.
- Seatbelts do save lives in the event of a car accident so:
- Always wear your seatbelt as tight as possible
- Always wear the lap belt over your pelvis and hips,
- Wear the diagonal strap over your shoulders,
UK law states:
- That adults and children over 12 or over 1.5 metres must wear seatbelts in the front of a car, and the back if available.
- Children aged between 3 and 11, under 1.5 metres have to wear a child restraint, and if one is not available they they must wear a seatbelt in the front of the car, or in the back. It is safer for children to travel in the back of a car, unless restraints are better in the front.
- Children below the age of 3 must wear a child restraint if it is available, but if it is not, then they must travel in the back. If appropriate restraint is only available in the front, then they must wear that restraint.
- Passengers travelling in taxis must wear seatbelts.
Exceptions
- You can travel without a seatbelt if the car your in does not have rear seatbelts and it is not possible to sit in the front.
- Delivery van drivers can drive 50 metres between collections and deliveries without wearing a seatbelt.
- You don’t have to wear a seatbelt if you are reversing.
