Infulencing factors in whiplash injury

Whiplash is topical subject and much research has been conducted to establish exactly how it happens, its cause and effect but what contributes what makes it more likely for some more than others to develop whiplash from a car accident.

Whilst there are factors that play a role such as how the accident happened, vehicle safety features and other variables there is a host of other determining factors that make it more likely for some people to suffer more than others from the symptoms of whiplash injury.

Research has shown that women are twice as likely as men to develop whiplash symptoms.  There are many reasons for this but generally women have weaker neck muscles compared to men.  Women with the largest chance of developing whiplash injury are those who are tall and between 20 and 50 and some believe that middle aged women are in the highest risk category.

Whilst the use of seat belts has generally saved thousands of lives and prevented personal injury following a car accident it is also a reason suggested by many professionals because they prevent the body from moving increasing the amount of force under which the neck is placed on.

Many people also believe the improper use of head restraints has been proven to increase whiplash incidents.  Saab installed an active head restraint system in their vehicles and noted a 43% reduction in whiplash type injuries.

Seated positioning can also have an effect on whiplash neck injury as it has been noted that in a rear collision car accident the front seat passengers are in more risk that the rear seat passengers.

It has also been demonstrated that drivers have a lower chance of receiving whiplash injury because the driver has more chance of noticing a collision and preparing for it. If a person is unaware of the accident they are more likely to suffer from a whiplash neck injury.
